The 1/2 Hour News Hour

The 1/2 Hour News Hour, Fox News' answer to The Daily Show will finally see the light of day at 10 PM on Sunday. According to Variety, the second episode will air at the same time on March 4. The Huffington Post and Slate discuss it today. Here's a clip from YouTube:

Apparently the blogosphere isn't impressed. I thought the BO mag cover was OK. Its time slot creates a bit of a dilemma. It's on at the same time as Extras and Battlestar Galactica, so the adult's dual-tuner DirecTivo is otherwise occupied. Guess it will have to go on the kids' DirecTivo.

Comments

I thought the Fox News promo video was quiet funny. I cannot say much since I haven't seen the entire episode, but I am optimistic that this will be a new conservative trend. A politically incorrect comedy site called ourcountry.com is already making conservative comedy on the net.

Um, I'm a little confused that someone has left me a comment using my own name. Is your name my name too?I think most folks think T1/2HCH is "quiet funny" too, if by "quiet funny" you mean funny that elicits an occasional quiet snicker as opposed to the hearty guffaw that The Daily Show routinely prompts. Also, don't fear all you lefties, the balance of liberal bias in the media that we count on to brainwash the 18 to 24 demographic is not in jeopardy...a new season of Real Time with Bill Maher starts this week too!

"Answer" may be a bit too generous. The clip is actually kind of sad. Jon Stewart these people are not. Fortunately, it's on FoxNews, which may be the only place it could get an audience.

I saw a clip yesterday with Rush as President and Ann Coulter as VP. It was quite funny - laugh out loud funny. I also read the blog you have linked here about it in which all the comments were very negative. I guess libs can make fun of us in their shows, but we can't have a show that makes fun of them.

The Daily Show sets a high standard. Hopefully T1/2HNH can rise to meet it.Also, TDS skewers both sides of the aisle (though perhaps not with the same enthusiasm).

I watched the clip, and thought that the BO magazine was pretty good. Its just hard to sit and watch this obvious theft of the Daily Show. I'm not a fan of Daily Show--Jon Stewart is a bad actor who has found his niche doing what some liberals do well--make fun of what you don't like or don't understand.Just like every new talent program has a black guy, a pretty woman, and a snippy brit as judges, this show is just a hack.

Sounds like a laugh track to me.

One of the reviews (I don't remember which) was criticizing the laugh track in comparison to TDS's real, more natural laughter. Of course, we know after attending a taping of it that the TDS's laughter, while being real, isn't entirely natural as they work you up ahead of time and train you to make your laughter really "pop."

Jason,I can't debate your taste in comedy and satire, but in my opinion TDS (and TCR) is a brilliant example of both. And I don't think they're making fun of something they don't understand. They pay very close attention, understand it, dissect it, and make plain the double-speak and absurdity that is so common in politics and culture.Admittedly, it's probably a lot less funny when it's people you admire that are being skewered...which may help explain why libs are generally unimpressed by what they've seen so far (admittedly only a tiny bit) of T1/2HNH .

I went back and re-read my comment. I didn't mean to imply that the people on TDS do not understand the issues, clearly they do, and I love the way they spotlight obsurdities using satire. It is quite brilliant, and I enjoy it very much. Sometimes all they have to do is open the mic and let them go, which is the best kind. What I meant to get across is that they don't understand the way conservatives think, or rationalize. They understand the issues very well, but do not, and probably cannot, really understand what makes the other side think the way they do.

Lisa and I watched the first episode of T1/2HNH last night. I didn't think it was an auspicious beginning. I'll post more about it later.
