First of all, a huge thanks to lillian for sending this to me!

A show from very early in Chan Marhsall's career, a month after the Myra Lee / Dear Sir sessions in NYC, December 1994. The setlist consists primarily of material from those albums (all the stuff she doesn't perform anymore). The cover of Hank Williams' "Dear Brother" is one I've never heard her do, and Track 10 seems to be an unreleased original.

When Chan plays with other people they tend to keep her focused on the task at hand, which means she finishes all the songs. Unfortunately she hasn't done either of those things very often in her recent live shows (play with others or finish songs). Tim (Two Dollar Guitar) and Steve (Sonic Youth) complement her well here. This show demonstrates how much Chan has grown as a songwriter since 1995; this is a promising set of songs, but nothing here is as arresting as her later work such as "King Rides By", "Cross Bones Style", or "I Don't Blame You."

Video is handheld camcorder shot clear and straight from the front row, decent sound. Chan's vocals could stand to be louder in the mix, but when she lets loose with one of her trademark de profundis yowls she can still drag you to the muddy river bottom of her soul (and yours). Crowd gets a little loud at times. The videotaper hit pause in between songs, so we don't get to hear much Chan banter. But all in all this a rare and worthwhile treat for any Cat Power fan.

The DVD chapter stops correspond roughly to song beginnings, but in no way match them exactly.
