Ratatouille

200px-RatatouillePoster2.jpgLast Tuesday evening we went to see Ratatouille (2007,G) (ScreenIt! Review). We enjoyed it. Finn said it was the funniest movie he has ever seen. It was pretty good. We happened to be going to see it with some friends from France, so that made the film's Paris setting a bit more interesting. From Wikipedia:

Ratatouille is a 2007 animated feature film produced by Pixar. It tells the story of Rémy (voiced by Patton Oswalt), a rat living in Paris who wants to be a chef.

I give it 4 out of 5.

United 93

200px-United93.jpgSaturday night we watched United 93 (2006,R) (ScreenIt Review) in HD. From Wikipedia:

United 93 (formerly named Flight 93) is a 2006 Academy Award-nominated and BAFTA Award-winning docudrama written and directed by Paul Greengrass that chronicles events aboard United Airlines Flight 93, which was hijacked during the September 11, 2001 attacks. The film attempts to recount with as much veracity as possible (there is a disclaimer that some imagination had to be used), in real time, what has come to be known in the United States as an iconic moment of heroism. According to the filmmakers, the film was made with the full cooperation of all the families of the passengers.

Lisa warned me that it was cheesy, but I didn't think so. I thought it was a good film, very moving to watch. I give it 4 out of 5.

Amazing Grace

200px-Amazinggraceposter.jpgLast night Lisa and I celebrated her birthday with dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings and a movie. We saw Amazing Grace (2007,PG) (ScreenIt! Review). We probably would have seen something else, but there seemed to be nothing else interesting showing. The Adam Sandler movie, maybe, but it seemed to be getting tepid reviews. So, we went to see Amazing Grace. It was good...an inspiring story of a long fight for the greater good that finally won out. I also couldn't help seeing parallels with today...talk of lives wasted in a war gone bad and a tendency to allow our principles of decency to be violated in war time (tolerating slavery then...tolerating torture now). From the Wikipedia entry:

Amazing Grace is a 2007 film directed by Michael Apted about the campaign against the slave trade in 19th century Britain, led by famous abolitionist William Wilberforce, who was responsible for steering anti-slave trade legislation through the British parliament. The title is a reference to the hymn "Amazing Grace" and the film also recounts John Newton's writing of the hymn.

I give it 4 out of 5.

Three Seasons

threeseasons.GIFWhile running on the treadmill this afternoon, I finished watching Three Seasons (1999,PG-13) (ScreenIt! Review). From the Wikipedia entry:

Three Seasons is an American Vietnamese language movie filmed in Vietnam about the past, present, and future of Ho Chi Minh City in the early days of New Vietnam. It is a poetic film that tries to paint a picture of the urban culture undergoing westernization. The movie takes place in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon. As the characters try to come to terms with the invasion of capitalism, neon signs, grand 5-star hotels, and Coca-Cola signs, their paths begin to merge.

It has a plodding pace, but I don't mind. I give it 4 out of 5.

I am filled with Christs love

200px-Saved!_movie_poster.jpgTonight I finished watching Saved! (2004,PG-13) (ScreenIt! Review). From the ScreenIt! Review:

After becoming pregnant following her attempts to cure her boyfriend of his homosexuality, a teen finds her fundamentalist beliefs tested.

My favorite scene was when Hillary Faye yells "I am filled with Christ's love" while throwing her Bible at Mary and striking her in the back. What a great metaphor for how Christians often throw the Bible at other sinners without love while at the same time implicitly claiming to be filled with Christ's love. Another interesting tidbit from Wikipedia:

During a scene where Cassandra fakes speaking in tongues, the original script called for Hilary Faye and Mary to speak in tongues as well. In the commentary, Moore reveals that the woman who was training her and Eva Amurri to speak tongues gave them phrases to repeat, including "she bought a Hyundai" and "untie my bowtie."

And what Mary said looking at her newborn baby:

Life is too amazing to be this random and meaningless consequence of the universe. There had to be a God out there or something. Something inside. You just had to feel it...and when you think about it, what would Jesus do? I don't know, we'll be trying to figure it out together.

And The Replacements' songs at the prom. I give it 4 out of 5.
